How to Play Mental Math
Solve arithmetic problems as fast as you can. The quicker you answer, the higher your score.
Tip: Break big numbers into smaller parts to calculate faster.
💡 Mental Math Strategy
- Round, then correct. 47 + 38 is easier as 47 + 40 − 2. This one habit speeds up more problems than any other.
- Build on the tens. For 8 + 5, take 2 from the 5 to make 10, then add the remaining 3. Children are taught this as "bridging"; it works just as well at speed.
- Lean on doubles. Most people recall 7 + 7 instantly, so 7 + 8 becomes "double seven plus one".
- For ×9, multiply by 10 and subtract. 9 × 6 is 60 − 6. The same trick handles ×11 by adding instead.
- Accept a rhythm over a sprint. Scoring rewards speed, but a rushed wrong answer costs more time than a steady right one.
🧠 What Mental Math Builds
Timed arithmetic keeps number facts genuinely retrievable rather than merely familiar, and that retrieval speed is what frees attention for the harder parts of a problem. For older players it is one of the few exercises with a clear, honest score to track week over week. Sessions are short by design — a few minutes of real speed work beats twenty minutes of drifting.
