How to Play Number Bonds
Find pairs of numbers that add up to the target number shown. Tap both numbers to make a bond.
Tip: If the target is 10, any number X pairs with (10 - X).
💡 Number Bonds Strategy
- Anchor on ten. Learn the five pairs — 1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5 — until they are automatic. Every other target gets easier once they are.
- Scan the largest numbers first. A big number has the fewest possible partners, so it narrows the board fastest.
- Subtract rather than search. Instead of hunting for a pair, take the target minus the number in front of you and look for that one result.
- Clear pairs as you spot them. Leaving found pairs on the board makes the remaining options harder to see than they need to be.
🧠 What Number Bonds Builds
Number bonds are the building block underneath mental addition: someone who knows instantly that 7 needs 3 to reach 10 can break apart any larger sum on the fly. The game keeps the arithmetic small on purpose, so the gain is in retrieval speed rather than in calculation. It suits both children consolidating the facts and adults who want them fluent again.
