- Average play time: 5 minutes
- No download or signup required
- Works on desktop and mobile devices
How to Play Tangram
Drag and rotate the seven tans (geometric pieces) to fill the target silhouette exactly, with no gaps or overlaps.
Tip: Place the largest pieces first to establish the overall shape.
💡 Tangram Strategy
- Place the two large triangles first. They occupy half the total area, so their position is nearly always forced by the silhouette.
- Look at the corners of the target. A sharp point almost always needs a triangle tip; a square corner usually needs the square or the medium triangle.
- Save the parallelogram for last. It is the most awkward piece and the only one that may need flipping over, not just rotating.
- Every piece must be used, and none may overlap. If you have solved the outline with six pieces, the solution is wrong however right it looks.
- Work the outline, then the interior. Fixing the boundary constrains the middle far more than the other way round.
🧠 What Tangram Builds
Tangrams are a compact lesson in decomposition: seeing that a complex outline is really seven known shapes in a particular arrangement. That the parallelogram alone requires a flip rather than a rotation makes it one of the few everyday puzzles that teaches the difference between the two. The seven-piece set is over a thousand years old and has not needed changing.
