💡 Playing Addition Fun With Your Child
- Let them count on fingers. Finger counting is a developmental stage, not a bad habit, and children drop it themselves once facts become automatic.
- Teach counting on, not counting all. For 5 + 3, starting at five and counting three more is a real step up from counting all eight.
- Point out that 3 + 5 is 5 + 3. Knowing order does not matter halves the number of facts to learn.
- Celebrate the doubles. 2+2, 3+3 and 4+4 are usually memorised first and become anchors for the neighbouring facts.
🧠 What Addition Fun Teaches
This builds fluency with addition facts to ten, which is the threshold that makes larger arithmetic possible without strain. The aim is automatic recall rather than faster counting — a child who calculates 6 + 3 every time will struggle with 46 + 3 later. Short daily sessions work far better than occasional long ones. Suited to ages 5 to 8.
