Counting Fun

💡 Playing Counting Fun With Your Child

• Encourage touching each object. Pointing at items one at a time is what teaches one-to-one correspondence — the idea that each object gets exactly one number word.
• Count aloud together. Saying the numbers out loud matters more at this stage than getting the total right.
• Start below ten. Children usually secure 1–10 well before 11–20, and the teen numbers are irregular in English, so they take longer.
• Ask "how many?" after the count. Repeating the final number is a separate skill from counting, and it is the one that shows the concept has landed.
• Let a miscount pass. Recounting together is far more useful than correcting, and it keeps the activity from feeling like a test.

🧠 What Counting Fun Teaches

This game covers the foundation of early numeracy: one-to-one correspondence, the counting sequence, and cardinality — knowing that the last number said is the answer. Those three ideas are what everything in school arithmetic is built on, and they are learned through repetition with concrete objects rather than through explanation. Suited to ages 4 and up, in short sessions of a few minutes.
