How to Play Subtraction
Solve each subtraction problem quickly and accurately.
Tip: Think of subtraction as "how much to add to get from the smaller to the larger number".
💡 Playing Subtraction Adventure With Your Child
- Use "take away" and "how many more" both. Subtraction means two different things, and children who only meet one are confused by word problems later.
- Link it to the addition they know. If 4 + 3 = 7 is solid, then 7 − 3 = 4 follows — teaching these as a pair is far more efficient.
- Count backwards together. Counting down from ten is harder than counting up and needs its own practice.
- Stay within ten at first. Crossing ten adds a borrowing concept that is better introduced separately.
🧠 What Subtraction Adventure Teaches
Subtraction is consistently harder for children than addition, partly because it is not commutative and partly because it carries two distinct meanings. The visual approach here makes the "how many are left" reading concrete before the abstract notation arrives. Best introduced once addition to ten is comfortable. Suited to ages 5 to 8.
