How to Play Shape Matching
Match the shape on the left to the identical shape on the right. Tap your answer quickly for bonus points.
Tip: Focus on the number of sides and any unique angles.
💡 Playing Shape Match With Your Child
- Name the shape every time. Hearing "triangle" alongside seeing it is what attaches the word to the category.
- Talk about sides and corners. "Three sides, three corners" gives a rule that works for any triangle, not just the one on screen.
- Use rotated shapes deliberately. A triangle standing on its point is still a triangle — this is genuinely hard for young children and worth pausing on.
- Look for the same shapes around the room. Connecting the screen to real objects is what makes the category stick.
🧠 What Shape Match Teaches
Shape recognition is early geometry, but the deeper skill is classification: grouping different-looking things by a shared rule. Children who can identify a shape regardless of its size, colour, or rotation have grasped something more general than the shape names themselves. Suited to ages 4 to 7.
