How to Play Cryptogram
Each letter in the puzzle has been substituted with a different letter. Decode the message by figuring out which letter maps to which.
Tip: "E" is the most common letter in English — look for the most frequent symbol first.
💡 Cryptogram Strategy
- Count symbol frequency first. The most common symbol is very likely E, and after that T, A, O, I and N.
- Crack the one-letter words. A single-letter word is almost always A or I, and that is two substitutions for free.
- Look for THE. A repeated three-symbol word at the start of phrases is THE far more often than anything else.
- Use apostrophes. The letter after an apostrophe is nearly always S, T, or the pair RE — high-confidence guesses that unlock long words.
- Attack double letters. Repeated adjacent symbols are most often LL, SS, EE, OO or TT.
🧠 What Cryptograms Build
Solving a substitution cipher is hypothesis testing in miniature: you guess a mapping, follow its consequences, and abandon it when it produces nonsense. That loop — propose, test, discard — is the scientific method in compressed form, which is why cryptograms feel different from other word puzzles. They are the hardest word game here and the most rewarding to finish.
