How to Play Hangman
Guess the hidden word one letter at a time. Each wrong guess draws another part of the hangman figure. Guess the word before the figure is complete.
Tip: Start with the most common letters: E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, R.
💡 Hangman Strategy
- Open with E, A, and R. These are the most frequent letters in English and one of them appears in the large majority of words.
- Then take T, O, I, N, S. Working down the frequency order beats guessing by instinct almost every time.
- Use the word length. Three-letter words are heavily constrained; long words are likelier to contain suffixes such as -ING or -TION.
- Guess by pattern once you have a few letters. _ _ E _ E with an early E is a much smaller search space than it looks.
- Leave rare letters alone. Q, Z, X and J each cost a guess and pay off rarely.
