How to Play Word Ladder
Change one letter at a time to transform the starting word into the target word. Each step must be a valid word.
Tip: Work from both ends — start from the beginning word AND backwards from the target.
💡 Word Ladder Strategy
- Work from both ends. Building forward from the start and backward from the target usually meets in the middle in half the steps.
- Change vowels before consonants. Swapping the vowel keeps the surrounding consonant frame intact, and that frame is what makes the next word possible.
- Count the letters that differ. If start and target differ in three positions, you need at least three moves — that tells you whether you are on pace.
- Detour deliberately. Sometimes you must change a letter that already matches the target to reach a valid intermediate word.
- Every rung must be a real word. The constraint that makes the puzzle hard is also the one beginners keep forgetting.
🧠 What Word Ladder Builds
Word ladders sit exactly between vocabulary and pathfinding: you are searching a graph where the nodes are words and the edges are single-letter changes. That makes them unusually good at exercising flexible thinking, since the obvious direct route is often blocked and requires a step that looks like going backwards. Lewis Carroll invented the form in 1877 and the design has not needed improving.
