How to Play Vocabulary Builder
Read the definition and pick the correct word from four choices. Higher difficulty levels use more advanced vocabulary.
Tip: Eliminate obviously wrong answers first to improve your odds.
💡 Vocabulary Builder Strategy
- Break the word into parts. Roots and affixes carry most of the meaning: "bene-" is good, "-volent" is wishing, so benevolent is well-wishing.
- Use elimination on the definitions. Ruling out the two answers you know are wrong is usually easier than confirming the one that is right.
- Anchor each new word to a sentence. A word attached to a concrete example is retained far better than one attached to a definition.
- Look for the shared root. Recognising that a new word shares a stem with one you know is the fastest route to a reliable guess.
- Revisit the ones you missed. Spacing out repeats of the same word is what moves it into long-term memory.
🧠 What Vocabulary Builder Builds
Matching words to definitions is deliberate vocabulary study, and the root-and-affix approach means each word learned makes the next several easier rather than being an isolated fact. Because recall is tested rather than recognition, the words tend to become usable rather than merely familiar. It pairs naturally with the crossword and anagram games, which reward the same growing word stock.
