How to Play Money Counting
Add up the coins and notes shown and enter the total amount.
Tip: Tally the largest denomination first, then add smaller ones.
💡 Playing Money Counting With Your Child
- Learn each coin's value before combining any. Coin size does not match coin value, which is counter-intuitive and needs saying out loud.
- Count the big coins first. Starting with the highest value and counting down is the method that scales to real shopping.
- Practise making the same total different ways. Seeing several routes to the same amount is what shows the value is real rather than tied to particular coins.
- Give change by counting up. Counting from the price to the amount paid is easier and more accurate than subtracting.
🧠 What Money Counting Teaches
Money is where arithmetic first becomes visibly useful, and it introduces unequal units — unlike counting objects, each coin is worth a different amount. Making change adds a second step that combines addition and subtraction in one task. Suited to ages 6 to 10.
