How to Play Rhyming Words
Choose the word that rhymes with the target word. Pay attention to the sound, not the spelling.
Tip: Sound the words out loud (or in your head) rather than comparing letters.
💡 Playing Rhyme Time With Your Child
- Say both words aloud. Rhyme lives in sound, not spelling, so reading silently defeats the exercise.
- Stress the ending. Drawing out "c-AT" and "h-AT" makes the shared part audible for a child who cannot yet hear it.
- Accept nonsense rhymes. A child offering "zat" for "cat" has understood the pattern perfectly, which is the point.
- Point out the traps. "Through" and "though" look like they rhyme and do not — worth flagging once the basics are solid.
🧠 What Rhyme Time Teaches
Rhyme awareness is one of the strongest early predictors of reading success, because hearing that two words share an ending is the first step toward hearing individual sounds within words. It is a listening skill rather than a reading one, which is why it can be taught before a child reads at all. Suited to ages 4 to 7.
