💡 Playing Sight Words With Your Child
- Aim for instant recognition, not sounding out. These words are chosen precisely because phonics does not work reliably on them.
- Work a handful at a time. Five or six words until they are automatic beats twenty words half-learned.
- Put them in a sentence immediately. Sight words are function words — "the", "was", "said" — and they only make sense in use.
- Revisit yesterday's words first. A quick pass over previously learned words before adding new ones is what moves them into long-term memory.
🧠 What Sight Words Teaches
A small set of high-frequency words makes up a surprisingly large share of everything a child reads, so recognising them instantly frees attention for decoding the words that actually carry meaning. Many are irregular and resist phonics entirely, which is why they are taught by recognition. Suited to ages 5 to 8.
