How to Play Backgammon
Roll the dice and move your checkers around the board and off before your opponent. Block your opponent by building points (two or more checkers).
Tip: Hit your opponent's blots (single checkers) to slow them down.
💡 Backgammon Strategy
- Make points, do not just advance. Two checkers on one point form a block your opponent cannot land on — that is worth more than distance gained.
- Fight for the five point. The point five spaces into your home board is the single most valuable square on the table.
- Avoid leaving blots in range. A lone checker can be hit and sent back to the bar; check which rolls expose it before committing.
- Switch to a running game when ahead. If you are leading the race, stop making contact and just move; complexity only helps the player who is behind.
- Doubles give four moves, not two. Planning around that possibility changes which risks are worth taking.
🧠 What Backgammon Builds
Backgammon is the classic game of decision-making under uncertainty — the dice are random, but which checker you move is entirely skill, and good players win consistently over a session. That combination makes it a practical exercise in probability: you learn to ask how many of the 36 possible rolls hurt you. At roughly five thousand years old, it is the oldest game on the site.
