How to Play FreeCell
Move all cards to the four foundations (Ace to King by suit). Use the four free cells as temporary holding spaces.
Tip: Almost every FreeCell deal is solvable — think before you move.
💡 FreeCell Strategy
- Plan the whole sequence before your first move. Almost every FreeCell deal is winnable, so a loss is nearly always a planning failure rather than bad luck.
- Free cells are loans, not storage. Every card you park reduces how many cards you can move at once. Fill them only with a clear plan to empty them.
- Your move capacity is (free cells + 1) × (empty columns + 1). Knowing this number before you commit prevents most stuck positions.
- Dig for aces early. Aces buried deep in a column constrain everything; getting them out opens the foundations for the whole game.
- An empty column beats an empty free cell. Columns multiply your move capacity where cells only add to it.
🧠 What FreeCell Builds
FreeCell is the solitaire variant with almost no hidden information — every card is visible from the start, which makes it a pure planning puzzle rather than a game of chance. All but one of the original 32,000 deals are solvable, so the game genuinely measures how far ahead you looked. The move-capacity formula is the piece of knowledge that separates casual from consistent play.
