How to Play Chess Puzzles
Find the best move (or sequence of moves) to checkmate the opponent or win material. Click a piece then click its destination.
Tip: Look for checks, forks, and pins — these are the most common puzzle patterns.
💡 Chess Puzzle Strategy
- Look for checks, captures, and threats — in that order. Nearly every puzzle solution starts with one of these three forcing moves.
- Find the opponent's only legal replies. A move is forcing when it limits the answer to one or two options; that is what makes a combination work.
- Locate the loose piece. Endgame puzzles usually turn on one undefended piece that makes a fork or a skewer possible.
- Count the pawn race before starting it. In king-and-pawn endings the result is often decided purely by tempo, and the position is drawn or won before either side moves.
- Do not stop at a good move. Puzzles are set so that a natural-looking move falls just short; if it does not fully solve the position, keep looking.
🧠 What Chess Puzzles Build
Tactical puzzles isolate the calculation part of chess from opening theory, which is why they are the fastest-improving part of anyone's game. The discipline of scanning checks, captures, and threats before anything else is a repeatable procedure rather than an intuition, and it transfers directly to full games. These are the hardest positions in the classic-games set.
