How to Play Mahjong Solitaire
Remove matching tile pairs from the layout. A tile is free if nothing is on top of it and it has an open left or right side.
Tip: Remove tiles from the top of stacks first to uncover more options.
💡 Mahjong Solitaire Strategy
- Clear the top layers first. Tiles stacked on others block two tiles at once, so removing height opens more of the board than removing width.
- Look at what a match frees before making it. When the same tile appears three or four times, the pair you choose determines what stays reachable.
- Free the long end rows early. Tiles in those rows block many others and become unreachable if you leave them too long.
- A tile is playable only with a free left or right edge. Being visible is not the same as being available — this is the rule beginners misread most often.
- Avoid clearing all four of a tile type at once. Doing so can strand a later pair with no partner available.
🧠 What Mahjong Solitaire Builds
Despite the name this is a tile-matching puzzle rather than the four-player game of Mahjong, and the skill it asks for is spatial lookahead: reading which removals unlock the most future moves. The traditional tile faces — bamboo, characters, seasons — reward pattern familiarity, and most players get noticeably faster at recognising them within a few sessions. The layout is solvable, but only with the right removal order.
