💡 Connect Four Strategy

• Open in the centre column. It participates in more possible four-in-a-rows than any other, and the player who takes it has a proven advantage.
• Build threats that share a piece. Two lines that both need the same square force a win — your opponent can only block one.
• Look above your move. Filling a square hands your opponent the one directly on top of it; check what that gives them before you play.
• Watch the diagonals. Almost every missed loss in Connect Four is a diagonal, because the eye tracks rows and columns naturally.
• Count to three, then block. Any three in a row with an open end must be answered immediately, even if it costs you your own plan.

Connect Four is fully solved — the first player wins with perfect play from the centre — which makes it an unusually clean introduction to game theory ideas like forced wins and zugzwang. For children it is often the first game where they experience planning a trap two moves ahead rather than reacting. The vertical gravity rule is what gives it depth beyond noughts and crosses.
