How to Play Cribbage
Form card combinations worth points: fifteens (2 pts), pairs (2 pts), runs (1 pt/card). Score during play and in hand. First to 121 wins.
Tip: Always keep cards that give you the most points in different combinations.
💡 Cribbage Strategy
- Keep fives. The five is the most valuable card in cribbage because it makes fifteen with every ten-card, and there are sixteen of those in the deck.
- Think about whose crib it is. Discard scoring cards to your own crib and throw junk to your opponent's — this single habit is worth several points a hand.
- Avoid leading a five. Your opponent almost certainly holds a ten-card and will take the fifteen immediately.
- Count the runs during pegging, not just the show. Runs made in play score as they happen, and the points add up faster than most beginners expect.
- Hold cards that total fifteen in pairs. Each distinct combination scores separately, so a hand with several is worth more than its face value suggests.
🧠 What Cribbage Builds
Cribbage demands continuous mental arithmetic — you are summing to fifteen and thirty-one constantly, under a little time pressure — which makes it the most numerically active card game here. The two-phase structure, pegging then showing, means every discard is a decision with consequences in both phases. It has a reputation as a hard game to learn and an easy one to keep playing.
