How to Play Gin Rummy
Draw and discard to form sets (same rank) and runs (same suit, consecutive rank). Knock when your unmatched cards total 10 or less.
Tip: Watch what your opponent picks up — it tells you what they're building.
💡 Gin Rummy Strategy
- Count your deadwood every turn. Knocking early with a low count often beats waiting for a perfect gin that never arrives.
- Keep cards that work two ways. A 7♥ next to a 6♥ and a 7♠ can complete either a run or a set — those cards are worth holding over single-purpose ones.
- Discard high cards you cannot use. Face cards are ten points of deadwood each if the hand ends suddenly.
- Watch every discard your opponent takes. A picked-up card tells you which suit or rank they are collecting, and you can stop feeding it.
- Do not discard next to their pickups. If they took the 8♦, assume the 7♦ and 9♦ are dangerous.
🧠 What Gin Rummy Builds
Gin Rummy balances building your own hand against reading your opponent's, and the discard pile makes that reading genuinely possible rather than guesswork. The recurring decision — knock now with a small penalty, or hold for a better hand — is a clean risk assessment that repeats every few turns. It has been the standard two-player card game in English-speaking countries for roughly a century.
